5 Tips for using Google Analytics

1. How are your visitors finding you?

Did you ever wonder how your visitors find your website? Of course, some people find you directly, but being aware of where your users are coming from is important information! Often visitors click on your site after seeing your content on another page (Social Media platforms, other Websites/Blogs). These pages are named “referrals”.

To find out which of your referral sites are delivering most traffic, follow these steps in Google Analytics:

You will receive a list of referring sites and learn where your users are coming from. You can check how many people visited your pages in a certain time frame (which you can change in the upper right corner), and  how many pages those users visited when they were on your website. With the e-commerce data setup you can even find out if your customers ordered something after visiting a referral site.

It’s very useful to know where your users and customers are arriving from, because you can focus your promotion and shares on those specific channels, rather than wasting your time on others. For example, if you generate a lot of traffic via Pintrest or Google+, but you spend most of your time and money advertising and posting on Facebook, where not much traffic is coming from, you can simply change that pattern.

2. Where are your visitors located?

Google Analytics offers information on the geographical location of your users. Not the exact address, but their cities or towns. Why would you care about that? Well, maybe most of your visitors are coming from Canada, but you don’t deliver there. If you know where interested users are coming from, you may re-evaluate your distribution options.

The location report is also helpful for bloggers and people who want to schedule their next post. If you notice that most of your visitors are living in a different time zone, you may schedule your posts for a more convenient time. Knowing the location of your audience helps you to reach the people who are actively looking for your content.

3. Which content gets the most clicks?

Some very useful information that Google Analytics provides is the data about which content has been viewed most often. For example, if you’re a travel blogger and every now and then you write about food or fashion, you might realize that your food posts have been the most popular ones. With this information, you can go ahead and write more posts on that specific topic to increase your website’s traffic. Or maybe you’re running an e-commerce website, and notice that your “under 100$” section receives most of the traffic. Unfortunately, you’re only offering 4 products in this category! This might be a good opportunity to gather more products in the 100$ price range and increase your traffic and sales.

4. Set Goals!

When users visit your site, what do you want them to do? If you’re running any sort of website, you probably want visitors to take some kind of action. That could be anything: Do you want them to click through the checkout process and order something from you? Then one of the ‘goals’ you can set up in your analytics account may be reaching the “Thank you for your order” page.

But goals don’t have to be related to e-commerce. They can be anything: Users filling out a form, signing up for your mailing list or simply visiting a specific page on your website. Here’s some info on how to set up your goals.

5. Check your website in Real Time.

Did you just launch a new product, place some advertisement or publish a great post on your social media account? With Google Analytics, you can follow your website’s visitors in real time and find out how they respond to your content. You can find out how many users are on your website at the moment, from which referral site they came from, which pages they’re viewing, and more!

Just click on “Real Time” on the left side of the navigation bar. This feature makes it easy for you to monitor your campaigns and the pages your visitors spend the most time on.
