The importance of Backlinks

If you know some things about search engine optimization, you are probably familiar with the word “Backlinks”. What are Backlinks?

Links from other website, which direct to your page, are called Backlinks. They are also known as “inbound links”. Search engine algorithms use the number of Backlinks as an indicator to determine if your website is important and deserves a high ranking. But you don’t just want a high number of links from any random websites. In fact, if you get Backlinks from low quality sites, which don’t have anything to do with your page, it can hurt your ranking. Instead, you should focus on getting Backlinks from well established, high quality sites with a high PageRank. The search engines will consider the content of your Backlink’s page to determine the relevance of the inbound links for your website. If the Backlink includes content, which is related to your content, it’s more relevant!

For example, if your site is about losing weight, Backlinks from websites about working out and weight loss are more relevant than links from websites which distribute toys for kids.

The NoFollow Tag in Backlinks

Some links are not really important for search engines. These are tagged with the ‘NoFollow’ feature, which tells search engines that the page using the ‘NoFollow tag’ doesn’t support the page that the link leads to. Therefore, the linked page gets less relevant for search engines.  It’s difficult to keep up with that procedure, because some search engines follow that rule more than others. This means, a link containing the ‘NoFollow’ tag doesn’t necessarily become irrelevant to that pages traffic!

Reciprocal Links vs. Backlinks

If two websites link to each other to ensure mutual traffic and higher rankings, it’s called a reciprocal link. The problem with this strategy is that many of these exchanges are not very relevant. The irrelevant inbound link often gets ignored, while the outbound link still counts. This reduced the score of a lot of websites. Google targets reciprocal links and filters them for the search engine. Furthermore, Google recently released a patent which deals with the popularity and trustworthiness of sites that you link to from your own page. That means you might get penalized for linking to bad sites. You can protect yourself against it by only reciprocating to trusted websites which are also relevant to yours!   It’s difficult to keep up with Google’s ever changing algorithm, and building high quality Backlinks is a time consuming effort.
