The guys over at Moz.com have done it again, this time releasing some great data about the importance of local SEO. In this article, we'll have a look at their project and look to provide some help to our friends here in Bali, Indonesia.
What is "Local SEO?"
Local SEO refers to the efforts of a company's marketing team to strategically position their website(s) to rank well for geographically-specific searches. We can influence these results through on-page efforts such as including localized terminology, geographic references and strong indicators of physical location of the business. There are also off-page factors such as prominence and optimization of G+ links, G Places and other "social" signals. Finally, the searcher's physical location plays a roll as well.
How to implement localized search engine optimization
Let's use our company as an example. Island Media Management is located here in Bali and we primarily focus on providing services to businesses in Indonesia and across Southeast Asia. As you will notice throughout our site, we include many on-page references to Bali, Indonesia, and Asia as a whole. This helps Google and other search engines determine the geographical relevance of our offerings.
Similarly, we have prevalent Name, Address, Phone number (NAP) information listed consistently across the site. This provides a strong signal to Google (not to mention potential clients) that we are physically present here in Bali, that we are a legitimate organization, and that we are open for business.
Location-targeted optimization is not new!
Here's a great video from Rand Fishkin, CEO of MOZ.com, explaining the importance of localized search engine optimization over a year ago.
