YouTube or Instagram – Which one for marketing?

YouTube and Instagram are some of the most notable names on the internet, when it comes to social media platforms. Both platforms dominate the internet when it comes to sheer audience. They are both visual platforms, with the former focused on video content and the latter focused more on photos, though it is quickly embracing video as well.

So, which of the two platforms should you use for your business? Each one has its own unique pros and cons, selling points and ways to engage with your audience. It all comes down to how you want to market your brand or business.

Instagram Vs. YouTube

To brush up on a bit of history, here are some interesting facts about the two platforms. YouTube was founded back in February, 2005 which was then bought by Google only 18 months after it was founded for $1.65 Billion. Google, being the biggest search network on the planet, is followed by none other than YouTube itself, which is bigger than Bing and Yahoo combined.

Instagram on the other hand is also behemoth on its own. With over 500 million active users per day, and 100 million photos and videos uploaded daily, Instagram dominates the mobile application platform around the world. It’s mobile-friendly interface makes it easy to connect with friends and communities on the internet.

As a platform, both Instagram and YouTube have their pros and cons. However, since YouTube is primarily a video streaming service – as opposed to the more photo-oriented Instagram – it would be only be fair to compare the capacity of the two as video streaming services.

First off, with Instagram being a mobile platform, it is more favored by content creators, travelers, photographers, marketers and other content creators who prefer to have their content delivered in bite-sized chunks. Being a mobile platform means that the content is more easily digestible, more visual, and also be able to tap into the community of Instagram users worldwide.

Another advantage of Instagram is that they allow businesses to interact directly with their audience via comments and direct messages, making this platform more personal and intimate. It is also lower in terms of cost to work with influencers.

On the other end of the spectrum is YouTube, which is a powerhouse on its own right. As opposed to Instagram, YouTube puts more emphasis in longer video content and consequently higher production value. And with that comes longer content, making YouTube a more permanent long-term platform for creators to use.

Unlike Instagram, video content doesn’t get lost in a “feed” on YouTube, which gives your content a long-life span. In a way, YouTube is more preferable if you want to build a deeper connection with your content in the long run.

Do you prefer to use Instagram or YouTube for your business?

To summarize, both Instagram and YouTube offer comprehensive features that are both capable to deliver your content effectively. It all comes down to your business objectives, how you want to resonate with your audience and the ideas that you want to convey.

Regardless of your choice, make sure to not compromise on creativity, quality and originality, as they are key ingredients to a successful campaign.
